What is it?
A multi-year compute deal between Anthropic and SpaceX. Anthropic gets exclusive access to all capacity at Colossus 1, the SpaceX-built AI data center in Memphis, Tennessee. The first wave of capacity comes online within a month of the announcement.
How does it work?
Colossus 1 ships more than 300 megawatts and over 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs in a single facility — enough to materially expand Claude inference and training capacity. Anthropic is plugging that capacity into existing serving infrastructure, then immediately raising user-facing limits: Claude Code 5-hour rate limits double for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans, peak-hour reductions are removed for Pro and Max, and Claude Opus API rate limits go up.
Why does it matter?
Compute scarcity has been the practical ceiling on Claude usage for the past year, with peak-hour throttling and Claude Code burst caps the most-felt symptoms. SpaceX's S-1 filing on May 20 disclosed the price tag: $1.25B per month through May 2029, putting the deal at over $40B in total revenue for xAI, with either side able to terminate on 90 days' notice. The filing also notes SpaceX expects to sign 'additional similar services contracts,' positioning xAI as a neocloud. Doubling Claude Code limits and removing peak-hour cuts is the first time Anthropic's public capacity has visibly outrun demand. The Colossus deal sits on top of Anthropic's existing 5 GW Amazon, 5 GW Google+Broadcom, and $30B Microsoft+NVIDIA agreements.
