Siri's AI can be replaced — iOS 27 code has hooks for Claude and ChatGPT
Private frameworks in iOS 27 and the macOS 27 Golden Gate release candidate let a third-party model serve as a Siri extension, or replace Siri's server-side model outright. Apple has not opened the entitlement or announced the feature.
Two private mechanisms in the shipping macOS 27 release candidate show Apple built Siri so another company's model can answer for it.
What is it?
Model Delegation is the first of two mechanisms a code analyst known as pdfu found in the private frameworks of iOS 27 and the macOS 27 Golden Gate release candidate, reported by MacRumors on 14 September 2026. It lets a model such as Claude appear as a Siri extension, the same slot the built-in ChatGPT extension already occupies. The second is an Inference Provider protocol in Model Manager Services, which goes further and replaces Apple's own server-side Siri model. Apple has said nothing about either, so the reporting rests on the code alone.
How does it work?
Under the Inference Provider protocol an outside model receives Siri's planner prompt and its tool definitions, can request system actions and reach personal data, and returns results that Siri presents in its own interface and voice. MacRumors describes a demonstration on macOS where the user opens the Search or Ask bar, picks Claude from an 'Ask…' menu, asks for a reminder in plain language, and Siri creates it. 9to5Mac reports the path exists but is switched off, and that the 'Ask…' picker currently offers only ChatGPT.
Why does it matter?
Siri handles roughly a billion devices, so an assistant slot open to outside models would be one of the largest distribution channels an AI lab could plug into. For now nothing is shippable: Apple has not granted the model-delegation entitlement to third parties and the feature is not user-facing. An Apple developer session, public App Intents documentation for Model Delegation, or the entitlement appearing in a developer account would confirm it; the frameworks going private-only in the public release would suggest it was shelved. 9to5Mac also notes the option could land in the European Union first, following Apple's pattern with other regulator-driven changes.
