What is it?
Fake call detection is a new on-by-default feature in Phone by Google that flags incoming calls where the displayed contact ID does not match the contact's actual device. It targets voice-deepfake impersonation scams — the kind that mimic a parent's or a manager's voice to ask for emergency wires. INTERPOL's March 2026 fraud assessment pinned impersonation as a top driver of $400B in global losses.
How does it work?
When a saved contact dials you and both ends are running Phone by Google, the caller's device pushes a silent confirmation signal over end-to-end-encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS) the moment the call rings. The receiving phone checks that signal against the incoming call's metadata. If the contact's real device reports no outgoing call, Android shows an on-screen warning to hang up. If the contact does not have RCS, the system falls back to a secondary check before warning.
Why does it matter?
Generative voice cloning has made caller ID essentially useless against a determined scammer. A cross-device cryptographic handshake — riding on the open RCS standard — restores a hardware-level signal of authenticity without forcing users to learn safe-word rituals. Because the protocol is RCS, other Android dialers and OEMs can adopt the same check.
