What is it?

Google Cloud is launching OpenAI models in its Model Garden: GPT-6 Astra for demanding coding, computer-use and research work, GPT-6.1 Sol for near-Astra quality at lower cost, and GPT-6 Luna for fast, cheap everyday work. Google says this makes it the only hyperscale cloud offering all three leading closed-source LLM families.

How does it work?

The OpenAI models run on dedicated Google Cloud infrastructure behind isolated gateways, and customers call them through APIs. Usage is sold through Google Cloud Marketplace, so it lands on the same invoice, draws down existing cloud commitments and counts toward Flexible Savings Plans. Codex CLI and Desktop workflows can also point at Google's Gemini platform for inference.

Why does it matter?

Enterprises that standardised on Google Cloud no longer need a separate OpenAI contract to use GPT-6-class models. Every call runs under an authenticated identity with VPC Service Controls and unified audit logs, which makes mixing OpenAI, Gemini and Claude models easier for security and finance teams to approve.

Frequently asked questions

Can anyone use OpenAI models on Google Cloud today?
No. Google Cloud says GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are rolling out in private preview to select enterprise customers in Model Garden, with more coming soon. Other Google Cloud customers can register through Google's interest form for OpenAI models to request access.
How are OpenAI models on Google Cloud billed?
OpenAI models on Google Cloud are sold through Google Cloud Marketplace. All usage appears on a single Google Cloud invoice, draws down existing cloud commitments, and counts toward Flexible Savings Plans across model providers. Google's announcement does not list per-token prices for GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Luna.
Does Google train on prompts sent to OpenAI models in Model Garden?
Google Cloud says customer prompts, context and outputs sent to OpenAI models stay inside the customer's data perimeter and are never used to train foundation models. Zero Data Retention options and Confidential Compute for the OpenAI models are listed as coming soon, not available at launch.
Will OpenAI models appear in Google Antigravity?
Yes, according to Google Cloud. The announcement says OpenAI models will be available in Gemini for business and Google Antigravity soon, but gives no date. Today the models launch in Model Garden, and Codex CLI and Desktop workflows can already connect to Google's Gemini platform for inference.
