What is it?

Sign-to-text dictation now ships on Pixel 11, powered by a Google DeepMind model called SL2T. A signer signs at the phone camera and the words come out as text they can send, search with, or pass to Gemini. SL2T was trained on over 100,000 hours of data across more than 50 sign languages, with roughly a quarter of that in American Sign Language. The first pair Google turned on is ASL to English.

How does it work?

The pipeline splits in two. An on-device model, MediaPipe Holistic, tracks points on the signer's face, hands and body, and only those geometric coordinates are sent to the server. SL2T then translates that coordinate sequence straight into text, skipping the intermediate annotations known as glosses that most sign language systems rely on. The original video is discarded immediately, so no footage of the person leaves the phone.

Why does it matter?

Typing has been the fallback for Deaf signers on a phone, and sign-to-text removes that step for everyday tasks like drafting a message or asking Gemini a question. On the FLEURS-ASL benchmark SL2T scores 70 BLEURT with no task-specific tuning, which Google DeepMind says is significantly higher than any previously reported score. Google built the model with an advisory committee of Deaf organizations, and it handles one-handed signing and left-handed signers.
