Hitachi and Anthropic announced a strategic alliance to put Claude inside Lumada 3.0 across critical-infrastructure sectors, with a joint Frontier AI Deployment Center scaling from 100 to 300 experts and AI training for 100,000 Hitachi engineers.
Anthropic gets a frontier-AI seat inside one of the world's largest industrial operators, covering grids, rail, factories, and banks.
What is it?
Lumada is Hitachi's umbrella for IT + OT (operational technology) products and services that already run inside electricity grids, rail networks, manufacturing lines, and financial-services back offices. "Lumada 3.0" is the latest iteration. Under the alliance, Anthropic's Claude becomes the frontier-model layer across that stack, deployed for system engineering, operations, and cybersecurity.
How does it work?
Hitachi and Anthropic are standing up a joint Frontier AI Deployment Center spanning North America, Europe, and Asia, starting with around 100 Anthropic Applied AI specialists and Hitachi IT/OT/cyber experts, scaling to 300. Hitachi will roll Claude out internally to its roughly 290,000 employees and run training programs to certify 100,000 of them as AI professionals. Hitachi's Cyber Center of Excellence will work with Anthropic's threat-detection teams on infrastructure-sector security.
Why does it matter?
Most enterprise AI deals are with consultancies (KPMG, PwC). This one is with a vertically integrated industrial operator whose products touch grids, trains, and factory floors. It is one of the largest physical-AI footprints any frontier lab has bought into, and it slots Claude into critical-infrastructure operations that traditionally avoid SaaS-only models.
