Hackers Asked Meta's AI Support Bot to Change Instagram Account Emails — and It Did: White House, Sephora, and Space Force Chief Among the Hijacked Accounts

Attackers prompted Meta's AI support chatbot to swap the email on target Instagram accounts, then collected the verification code on their own email and locked owners out. White House, Sephora, and the Chief Master Sergeant of Space Force were among the hijacked accounts. Meta says it's patched.

What is it?

A real-world AI-system failure where Meta's support chatbot — rolled out earlier this year to handle Facebook and Instagram account recovery — could be talked into changing the email tied to any target Instagram account. The hackers then received the one-time verification code at their own inbox and completed a password change, bypassing 2FA via the recovery path.

How does it work?

Reporting from 404 Media and a write-up by security researcher Sid describe the flow: spoof location via VPN to match the target's region, message the support AI claiming the account is hacked, ask the bot to relink the account to a new email, receive the verification code at that email, and reset the password. The bot performed no human escalation and didn't verify ownership of the destination address.

Why does it matter?

In March 2026, Meta announced its AI support assistant would handle 'solutions, not just suggestions,' including account security and recovery. This is the first documented production exploit of that architecture, and it took down the official Barack Obama White House Instagram account, Sephora's account, and the Chief Master Sergeant of Space Force's account. Meta says the issue is now fixed and impacted accounts are being secured.
