Claude in drug development — Anthropic reports early results with six partners

Anthropic worked with six drug developers, including BMS, Generate Biomedicines and BigHat, to test Claude across drug development. Claude designed antibodies, improved a CAR-T part and cut regulatory paperwork review by 89%.

What is it?

Anthropic's life sciences team spent several months working with six drug developers to find where Claude speeds up drug development, from picking targets to planning clinical trials. The post reports case studies with lab results and links each partner's technical report. Anthropic also acquired Mithril Medicine, a one-person company whose founder used Claude to run a muscular dystrophy program with 11 outside labs.

How does it work?

Claude worked inside each partner's own workflow. At Generate Biomedicines, scientists used Claude Code to redesign one part of a CAR T-cell therapy; one design was about 70% shorter and let cells make roughly 10x more receptors. At Divergence Labs, Claude produced about 35,000 antibody designs against IgE in about a month. Connected to BigHat's lab data system, it proposed antibody changes, and the best versions bound more than 10x more tightly.

Why does it matter?

The results reach past molecule design into the slow paperwork and planning around it. On 1,061 pages of Enveda manufacturing documents, Claude caught all 11 issues human reviewers found plus seven more, and review time fell 89%. Bristol Myers Squibb uses Claude to judge early clinical trial plans. Anthropic stresses that most of this work is preclinical, and no drug from it has been tested in people yet.

Who is it for?

drug discovery scientists, biotech teams, pharma R&D leaders

Frequently asked questions

Which companies worked with Anthropic on Claude for drug development?
Anthropic's drug development post names six partners: Generate Biomedicines (CAR T-cell therapy for solid tumors), Divergence Labs (food allergy antibodies against IgE), BigHat Biosciences (antibody lead optimization), Enveda (manufacturing documents and regulatory filings), The Column Group's new company Pleiades (target assessment), and Bristol Myers Squibb (clinical trial planning).
Has any drug designed with Claude been tested in humans?
No. Anthropic says the drug development work is early and mostly preclinical. Divergence Labs' antibody designs are early hits, and the two-armed drug is not built yet. The Mithril Medicine muscular dystrophy candidate has promising mouse results, and Anthropic says a drug could reach human trials as soon as late 2028 if the candidates keep holding up.
What is Mithril Medicine and why did Anthropic acquire it?
Mithril Medicine was a one-person company run by Cody Tranbarger, who used Claude to coordinate contracts, logistics and experiments with 11 outside labs. A possible treatment for one form of muscular dystrophy went from idea to promising mouse results in under 18 months. Anthropic acquired Mithril, and it is now an Anthropic research program.
How much time did Claude save on regulatory documents at Enveda?
At Enveda, manufacturing chemists spent up to 75% of their time on paperwork. Reviewing 1,061 pages, Claude found all 11 issues human reviewers caught and flagged seven more, cutting human review from over 25 hours to under three. One regulatory document Claude drafted took four hours instead of about three months by hand.
Can other life science teams get access to Claude for this kind of work?
Anthropic points researchers to Claude Science, its AI workbench for scientists, plus Claude credits for life scientists, the Life Sciences Verification Program for trusted organizations that need looser biology safeguards, and an open call for guest investigators. Anthropic says it plans to scale the drug development work and extend Claude into clinical trials.
