What is it?
Claude Cowork is Anthropic's desktop agentic product -- an AI assistant that lives in the Claude Desktop app on macOS and Windows and can read your screen, use your apps, and perform multi-step tasks on your behalf. It launched three months ago as a research preview. On April 9 it exited preview and became generally available on all paid Claude plans (Pro, Team, Enterprise).
How does it work?
Cowork runs as a background agent in the Claude Desktop app. With GA, Anthropic added six enterprise features: role-based access controls so admins can scope which Claude capabilities each team gets, group spend limits for per-team budgets, expanded usage analytics with a dashboard and API, OpenTelemetry event emission compatible with Splunk and Cribl, a Zoom MCP connector that pipes meeting summaries and action items into Cowork workflows, and per-tool connector controls that let admins restrict specific actions organization-wide.
Why does it matter?
Desktop AI agents are only useful to enterprises if IT can control access, track usage, and set budgets. These six features are the table-stakes controls that let security and finance teams say yes to a broader rollout. The Zoom connector is also notable -- it is the first first-party MCP connector from Anthropic that bridges a third-party productivity app directly into the agent loop.
