How employment is changing at Anthropic — agents now log 6x human hours

The Anthropic Institute's report on its own workforce finds agent work hours passed human hours in March 2026, junior technical hires fell from 27% to 9%, and code commits per engineer rose about 5x in six months.

What is it?

'How employment is changing at Anthropic' is a technical report from the Anthropic Institute about Anthropic's own workforce. It finds that agent work hours passed human work hours in March 2026 and reached six times the hours of the employees directing them by August. The share of junior people in technical departments fell from 21% to 14% since early 2025.

How does it work?

The authors combine internal records on headcount, Claude usage, code output, surveys, Slack, calendars and hiring scorecards with 17 employee interviews. Productivity estimates come from a staggered-adoption design that compares 192 engineers who adopted coding agents with 74 who did not; the report notes adoption was not random, so selection bias is possible. Claude-based graders coded agent logs, task difficulty and scorecard comments.

Why does it matter?

A frontier lab is reporting hard numbers on how coding agents change hiring and daily work, not a forecast. The biggest bottleneck it finds is people: about 80% of interactive Claude session time is spent waiting for human input, and meta-work like managing agents and building tools rose from 10% to 22% of sessions.

Frequently asked questions

Did code quality drop when Anthropic engineers used coding agents?
Anthropic's employment report compared code written by agents with code the same person wrote directly in the same month. The authors found no difference in how often that code was later deleted or reverted. They measured this alongside commits per engineer, which rose to about five times the level of six months earlier.
Are non-technical Anthropic employees using coding agents too?
Yes. The Anthropic Institute report says coding-agent sessions by non-technical employees rose from 2 per month in August 2025 to 90 per month in May 2026. It also reports higher output outside engineering, such as lawyers processing more contracts and salespeople closing more deals.
How has hiring at Anthropic changed because of AI?
Anthropic's report finds the share of junior technical hires fell from 27% to 9%, and technical departments dropped from 61% to 56% of total employment over the past year. Mentions of candidates' AI tool use in hiring scorecards roughly tripled for technical roles and quadrupled for non-technical roles between 2024 and 2026.
Do Anthropic employees spend less time in meetings now?
No. The Anthropic Institute report says the median Anthropic employee spends 20% more time in meetings than a year earlier, and individual contributors in technical roles saw a 16% increase. The authors link this to more coordination work as agents take on more of the hands-on tasks.
Is there a companion report on how people expect AI to change work?
Yes. On the same day the Anthropic Institute published 'The AI expectations gap', which compares Anthropic staff with US adults. It finds over half of Anthropic staff expect AI to do at least 80% of their current work by 2030, against 5% of US workers, and 91% of staff expect a Nobel-level AI discovery by 2030.
