What is it?
Claude Fable 5 promotional access now runs until 2026-07-12 at 11:59:59 PM PT, four days later than the original 2026-07-07 cutoff. Pro, Max, Team, and eligible Enterprise plans still get to use Fable 5 for up to 50% of their weekly usage without paying extra. After the new cutoff, Fable 5 will only be reachable via usage credits.
How does it work?
The support page controls the switch: while the promotion is active, Fable 5 requests count against the same weekly limit as Opus and Sonnet. Once the window closes, Fable 5 is metered separately at API rates and users have to enable usage credits in billing settings to keep prompting it — Opus 4.8, Sonnet 4.6, and Haiku 4.5 stay covered by the subscription.
Why does it matter?
For subscribers, the extension buys time to decide whether Fable 5's answers are worth $10 / $50 per million tokens or whether Opus 4.8 at $5 / $25 is close enough. It is also the first public case of Anthropic walking back a Claude Fable rollout timeline, and signals that pay-per-model may be how new frontier tiers ship until capacity catches up.
Who is it for?
Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need to opt in to keep Fable 5 access until July 12?
- No. Anthropic's support page says Fable 5 stays included on Pro, Max, Team, and eligible Enterprise plans through July 12 automatically — 'nothing needs to be activated to receive the benefit.' Existing subscribers keep access without changing any setting.
- What happens on July 13 if I don't enable usage credits?
- Fable 5 stops working on subscription plans on 2026-07-13. To keep using Claude Fable 5 after that, Pro, Max, and Team subscribers must switch on usage credits in billing settings. Without credits, users fall back to Opus 4.8, Sonnet 4.6, and Haiku 4.5, which stay included.
- How much does Fable 5 cost through usage credits?
- Claude Fable 5 usage credits bill at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, with a 90% discount on cached input. That is double Opus 4.8's $5/$25 rate and makes Fable 5 the most expensive Claude model on Anthropic's public price sheet.
- Why did Anthropic extend the deadline?
- The extension followed public criticism after Anthropic announced Fable 5 would drop out of subscription plans just seven days after redeploying. Subscribers said the 2026-07-01 rollout felt like a bait-and-switch, and Anthropic added four days without changing the usage-credit rules themselves.
- Does the change affect Claude API pricing?
- No. API access to Claude Fable 5 has always been billed per token and is not part of this promotion. The extension only touches the Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscription plans on claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork.
