What is it?

How does it work?
ChatGPT apps run inside the chat surface OpenAI rolled out earlier in 2026. When a user types '@Etsy help me find a Mother's Day gift under $100 for my mom who loves gardening', the app translates the natural-language brief into Etsy queries, returns ranked listings inline, and links out for checkout. Crucially, this is a native app — purchase still happens on Etsy — replacing the deprecated Instant Checkout flow that tried to keep the transaction inside ChatGPT and was shut down in March because volume was too low.
Why does it matter?
Etsy is the second high-volume retailer to move from Instant Checkout to a native ChatGPT app, signaling that OpenAI's earlier 'check out without leaving the chat' bet is being replaced with a 'be a discovery channel that drives traffic out' model.
