Project Suncatcher — Google's satellite runs Gemma 4 on a TPU in orbit
In short
Google's Project Suncatcher prototype satellite answered its first prompt from orbit. Gemma 4, running on a data-center-class TPU, wrote a haiku about space. Google calls it the first AI response from such a TPU in orbit.

Google's test satellite ran an open Gemma model on a TPU in space and sent the answer back to Earth.
What is it?
Project Suncatcher reached its "Hello World" milestone: the prototype satellite ran a Gemma 4 model on board and sent back a haiku about being in space. Google says this is the first AI response from a data-center-class TPU in orbit. The satellite launched on October 1, 2026, on a SpaceX Falcon 9.
How does it work?
During a ground-station pass, the team uploaded a prompt to the Gemma 4 model stored on the satellite. The reply came down as the satellite passed over Svalbard, Norway. TechCrunch reports the satellite carries four TPUs and makes up to 1 kW of power, so only one TPU can run at a time, for about 20 minutes.
Why does it matter?
Suncatcher is Google's long-term research bet on running AI compute in space on solar power. The next tests check how the TPUs handle heat stress and radiation. If they hold up, Google plans two linked satellites in 2027.
