What is it?

Mistral AI announced on May 19 that it is acquiring Emmi AI, a Linz-based startup founded in 2024 by Johannes Brandstetter that builds physics-AI models for industrial simulation across energy, automotive, semiconductors, and aerospace. Emmi raised the largest-ever Austrian seed round (EUR 15M) in 2025 from 3VC, Speedinvest, Serena, and PUSH.

How does it work?

Emmi's more than 30 researchers and engineers, including its co-founders, join Mistral's Science and Applied AI divisions in May 2026. Linz becomes Mistral's seventh global office and a hub for hiring in Austria, Germany, and Lithuania. Mistral will fold Emmi's physics-AI models into its product stack to target industrial workflows like manufacturing simulation, R&D acceleration, and digital twins. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Why does it matter?

This is Mistral's second acquisition and one of the larger European AI deals to date. Pairing a frontier-LLM lab with a domain-specific physics team signals that Mistral is staking a defensible position in industrial AI — a sector where US labs have less depth than they do in chat and code.
