What is it?

Mistral Small 4 now powers Firefox Smart Window, the AI assistant built into Mozilla's desktop browser. Mozilla opened the Smart Window beta in France with official French-language support, after earlier launches in the United States and Canada. Smart Window handles the busywork around a browsing task: it groups related tabs, replays your history visually, compares options, summarizes long pages, and pulls the pieces together so you can decide.

How does it work?

Smart Window does not tie the browser to a single AI provider. Firefox ships three built-in models and lets you bring your own, and this partnership adds Mistral Small 4 to that list. Conversations are not stored on Mozilla's servers by default, the Memories feature keeps what it remembers on your own device, and Mistral agreed to zero data retention for the traffic it handles.

Why does it matter?

The Mozilla and Mistral deal puts a European, open-weight-focused lab in front of Firefox desktop users without asking them to switch to another product. France gets the assistant in its own language for the first time, with the United Kingdom and Germany named for later in 2026. Mozilla argues the model picker is the real point — that a browser should not funnel every user toward one AI company.

Frequently asked questions

Which countries can use Firefox Smart Window?
Firefox Smart Window is in beta in the United States, Canada and France. France is the newest market and is the first to get official French-language support. Mozilla and Mistral say the United Kingdom and Germany follow later in 2026, with more of Europe after that. Smart Window is desktop-only today.
Can I use a model other than Mistral Small 4 in Smart Window?
Yes. Smart Window lets Firefox users pick from three built-in models or bring their own, so Mistral Small 4 is an added option rather than a forced default. Mozilla describes this choice as the point of the partnership, arguing that a browser should not push everyone toward a single AI provider.
Does Mozilla or Mistral keep my Smart Window conversations?
No. Mozilla does not keep Smart Window chat transcripts, does not train models on those conversations, and does not sell the data. Mistral agreed to zero data retention for the requests it serves. The Memories feature, which remembers useful context, stores that data locally on your own device, and you can view, delete or switch it off.
Is Firefox Smart Window available on mobile?
Not yet. Firefox Smart Window runs on Firefox desktop only, and it is still labelled a beta. To use it you download the latest Firefox desktop build and then open the Smart Window page. Mozilla has not published a mobile release date alongside this Mistral partnership announcement.
