Codex CLI 0.164.0 — saved prompt presets and inline /model settings

Codex CLI 0.164.0 adds ten numbered /presets slots for saved prompts and slash commands, inline /model and /permissions arguments, image previews in the fullscreen transcript and enterprise MCP sign-in options.

Codex now keeps your favourite prompts in numbered slots and lets you change model and permissions in one command.

What is it?

Prompt presets are the headline of Codex CLI 0.164.0: reusable prompts and slash commands can be saved in ten numbered /presets slots and opened from a keyboard menu. The /model and /permissions commands now also take inline arguments, so model, reasoning effort, speed and permission profile can be set in one line.

How does it work?

On terminals that support Kitty or Sixel graphics, the fullscreen transcript now previews images the agent viewed or generated. Enterprise MCP connections can authenticate with eligible Codex account grants, a dedicated sign-in, or OAuth clients that need secrets, and credentials are masked during supported remote Bash commands and Zsh snapshot sessions.

Why does it matter?

Teams that repeat the same instructions every session save typing, and enterprise users can connect MCP servers without custom auth workarounds. The release also fixes failed compaction leaving partial summaries in history, restores saved thread settings on resume, and hardens macOS sandbox checks.
