What is it?

GPT-Rosalind is OpenAI's domain-specific reasoning model for life sciences research, launched April 2026. The June 4 update swaps its underlying base to GPT-5.5, layers in stronger drug-discovery and genomics knowledge, and ships new tooling that lets the model touch real research data through Codex rather than just answer questions.

How does it work?

The new build inherits GPT-5.5's agentic coding and tool-use, then adds domain post-training for medicinal chemistry, quantitative biology, and wet-lab troubleshooting. Two new Codex plugins extend it: a Life Sciences Research plugin that connects to public scientific databases, and a Life Sciences NGS Analysis plugin for next-generation sequencing workflows. OpenAI introduces a new internal benchmark suite called LifeSciBench, covering evidence handling, analysis, design and optimization, scientific reasoning, validation and operations, and scientific communication.

Why does it matter?

The original Rosalind was an evidence-synthesis chatbot for trusted-access partners (Amgen, Moderna, Allen Institute, Thermo Fisher).
