Gemini agent — Google Cloud's one agent for work runs tasks for days
Gemini agent is Google Cloud's new single agent for work, announced at Gemini at Work 2026. You give it a goal, it plans and runs the job in the cloud for hours or days, and it can use Gemini or Claude models.

Google Cloud's Gemini agent takes a goal, not step-by-step instructions, and comes back with finished work.

What is it?
Gemini agent is a single, universal agent for work that Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian announced at Gemini at Work 2026 on October 8. One prompt box handles questions, knowledge work, content creation and coding. Google's pitch is "You give it objectives, not instructions."
How does it work?
The agent runs in the cloud, so it keeps one set of memories and context across every device and channel, and jobs that take hours or days keep going after you close your laptop. It can split work across sub-agents, call connectors such as Salesforce, ServiceNow, BigQuery, Jira, Git or any MCP server, and pick the model per task with Smart Routing. Each agent runs inside an Agent Sandbox, and all of its traffic passes through Agent Gateway, a policy firewall.
Why does it matter?
Google treats the agent and the model as separate choices, so one enterprise agent can route work to Gemini or to Anthropic's Claude. Coworker agents get their own Workspace account and an audit trail under their own identity, which gives IT teams a way to manage agents like employees. Hard spend caps in the Cloud Billing Console pause a project's agent when the budget runs out.

Frequently asked questions
- Can the Gemini agent use Claude models?
- Yes. Google Cloud says the Gemini agent orchestrates across the Gemini family of models and Anthropic's Claude models today, with other private and open models planned for the future. Google describes the agent and the model underneath it as separate choices, and its Smart Routing tool sends each workload to the model with the best performance for the lowest cost.
- Does a Gemini coworker agent get its own email account?
- Yes. Google Cloud says coworker agents built on the Gemini agent get their own Workspace account, with an email address, calendar, Drive storage and a place in the company directory. The agent acts under its own identity rather than the user's, sees only what people share with it, and every action is written to an audit trail in the agent's name.
- How do companies control what the Gemini agent spends?
- Google Cloud lets admins set a hard limit on a project's AI spend in the Cloud Billing Console, and the Gemini agent enforces it. When the cap is reached, that project's agent pauses, and work can resume with one click. Smart Routing also lowers cost by running each task on the cheapest model that does it well.
- Which industries get specialized Gemini agents?
- Google Cloud announced Gemini for Financial Services, which draws on FactSet, LSEG, S&P Global and SEC filings, and a legal agent that keeps matter-level permissions from NetDocuments and iManage. Both are in preview now. Google says versions for Government, Healthcare and Retail are coming soon, without a date.
