What is it?
Gemini for Mac is a native macOS application rolling out globally today to all Gemini users. It runs on macOS Sequoia (15.0) and later, Apple Silicon only. Unlike a browser tab, it integrates at the OS level — press Option+Space from any app to bring up Gemini, then optionally share your current window so it can answer questions about what's on screen, including local files.
How does it work?
A global keyboard shortcut (Option+Space for the compact bar, Option+Shift+Space for the full window) works from any context — while writing, coding, or reading — without switching apps. Screen sharing passes the current window's visual context directly to Gemini. Nano Banana image editing and Veo video generation are included. Chat history syncs across Mac, web, and mobile.
Why does it matter?
Browser-based AI assistants require a context switch every time you want help with something on screen. A native OS integration means Gemini is available inline during any task without disrupting the current window. This is Google's first Gemini desktop app on any platform.
