Muse comes to Mac — Meta's agent acts inside your desktop apps
Meta released a Mac app for Muse, its personal AI agent. On the desktop Muse works with files, Messages, Calendar, Notes and Mail inside those native apps, and asks you to confirm before anything sensitive.

Muse now ships as a Mac app that works inside the native file, mail and calendar apps instead of only in a phone app or a browser tab.

What is it?
The desktop app is the new piece. Muse, Meta's personal AI agent, can now take actions on a Mac — across files, Messages, Calendar, Notes and Mail — rather than being limited to a phone or the web. Meta shipped it on 17 September 2026, nine days after Muse launched on iOS, Android and the web.
How does it work?
Access is granted per app, so the agent only reaches what you allow, and Meta says it asks for confirmation before anything sensitive such as deleting a file or sending a message. That puts a checkpoint between an instruction and the action. Day-to-day, the desktop agent organises files and fills in forms by pulling details out of the apps it has been given.
Why does it matter?
A phone assistant cannot touch most of the work people do on a laptop, which is why desktop agents are where the competition has moved. Putting Muse on macOS for free sets an awkward baseline for anyone selling a paid computer-use agent, and the per-app permission model is the part worth watching: it decides how much of your machine an agent can actually see.
Frequently asked questions
- Does Meta charge for Muse on Mac?
- No. Meta lists Muse as a free AI agent for Mac and mobile, with no subscription named for the desktop app at launch. It is the same agent as the mobile and web versions, which Meta released in the United States on 8 September 2026 and which reached the top of the US App Store charts.
- What can Muse do on a Mac that the phone app cannot?
- On macOS Muse works inside native applications — files, Messages, Calendar, Notes and Mail — so it can organise files and fill in forms using details it pulls from those apps. The mobile and web versions have no equivalent reach into a desktop filesystem or into locally installed mail and calendar clients.
- Can Muse act on a Mac without asking first?
- Meta says no for anything sensitive. Users choose per application what Muse may access, including whether to grant Full Disk Access, and the app asks for confirmation before steps such as deleting a file or sending a message. Routine reading inside apps you have already approved does not prompt each time.
- Where else does Muse run?
- Muse launched on iOS, Android and the web on 8 September 2026 before the Mac app arrived on 17 September. Meta's earlier announcement described each person's Muse running in a dedicated cloud virtual machine, with a separate Sentinel agent approving anything that leaves that machine.
