What is it?

Rosalind Biodefense is a new OpenAI program that gives sponsored, vetted access to GPT-Rosalind — the company's life-sciences reasoning model first introduced in April — for biodefense, pandemic preparedness, and public-health workflows. It runs as a Trusted Access channel: qualified organizations apply, OpenAI sponsors GPT-Rosalind use and provides launch support, and applicants worldwide can build defensive applications on top.

How does it work?

GPT-Rosalind reasons over molecules, proteins, genes, pathways, and disease biology rather than serving as a general chatbot. Through Rosalind Biodefense, qualified teams plug it into early-detection systems, outbreak response planning, diagnostics, biosurveillance, and medical-countermeasure development. Launch partners Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) are using the model for biopreparedness, protein engineering, and vaccine development; Fourth Eon and SecureDNA are using it for DNA screening. OpenAI is also extending trusted access for select US government and allied partners with approved public-health and biodefense missions.
