What is Open SEO MCP Skills?

Open SEO MCP Skills is Eight MIT-licensed SEO and GEO skills for Claude that run on your own Search Console, GA4 and ads data through the hosted Ryze MCP connector. It sits in the SEO & AI Search Visibility category of the AI Productivity & Writing tools and is open-source, written in Markdown and licensed MIT.

Overview

Open SEO MCP Skills is a Claude Code plugin from Ryze AI that packages eight SEO and generative-engine-optimization (GEO) workflows as Agent Skills: a site audit, keyword research, rank tracking, a competitor keyword gap, a backlink check, an AI-visibility report, a SERP-driven content brief and an "SEO vs ads" overlap check. Each skill is a Markdown `SKILL.md` that tells Claude which tools to call, in what order, and what report to produce — for example, the audit compares 90-day Search Console periods, flags decaying pages, CTR anomalies, striking-distance queries and cannibalization, then spot-checks the worst URLs.

The skills do not fetch any data themselves. They depend on the Ryze MCP connector, a hosted server at `https://connector.get-ryze.ai/mcp` that the plugin bundles. After an OAuth sign-in it exposes your own Google Search Console, GA4 and Google Ads accounts as tools, plus DataForSEO for competitor keywords, backlinks and SERPs, and optionally Ahrefs or Semrush if you already pay for them. The README's pitch is that rankings and traffic come from your real Search Console positions and GA4 sessions, not scraped estimates — and that AI visibility is measured from the referral traffic ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini actually send, rather than by sampling prompts.

That makes the repository the open front end of a commercial product. The skills are MIT-licensed and can be copied, edited or pasted into any MCP client, and Ryze's own pages describe connecting the connector as free. Ryze AI itself is a paid platform for ads, SEO and CRO with monthly plans and free trials, and the README says data access runs through your Ryze workspace. This is a different project from OpenSEO, the self-hosted workbench that runs on your own DataForSEO key, and from Claude SEO, which audits a site by crawling it with sub-agents.

What it does

  • Eight skills: seo-audit, keyword-research, rank-tracking, competitor-gap, backlink-check, ai-visibility, content-brief and seo-vs-ads
  • Rankings and traffic read from your own Google Search Console and GA4 accounts, and keyword volumes from Google Ads keyword data
  • Competitor keywords, backlinks and SERP data from DataForSEO through the connector, with Ahrefs or Semrush usable if connected
  • AI-visibility report built from GA4 AI-referral traffic by engine, plus the landing pages AI engines send visitors to
  • Installs as a Claude Code plugin that bundles the Ryze MCP server, or by copying the skill folders into ~/.claude/skills
  • Every skill states its fallback when a data source is missing from the workspace, instead of substituting estimates

Getting started

You need Claude (Claude Code, claude.ai, Claude Desktop) or another MCP client, a Ryze sign-in, and the Search Console, GA4 or ads accounts you want the skills to read. These steps follow the README.

Add the Ryze MCP connector

In Claude Code, add the hosted server from the command line. In claude.ai or Claude Desktop, go to Settings → Connectors → Customize → add custom connector with the name Ryze AI and this URL. Sign in, pick a workspace, and connect Search Console, GA4 and any ads accounts once. The plugin bundles the connector, so in Claude Code this step is optional.

bashbash
claude mcp add ryze --transport http https://connector.get-ryze.ai/mcp

Install the skills as a plugin

bashbash
claude plugin marketplace add Ryze-AI-Adgent/open-seo-mcp-skills
claude plugin install open-seo-mcp-skills@ryze

Or copy the skill folders

The skills are plain Markdown, so you can also clone the repository and copy them into your global skills directory (the bundled install.sh does the same copy).

bashbash
git clone https://github.com/Ryze-AI-Adgent/open-seo-mcp-skills && cp -r open-seo-mcp-skills/skills/* ~/.claude/skills/

Ask for a report

Prompts from the README trigger the matching skill.

texttext
run an SEO audit on mysite.com
what keywords does competitor.com rank for that I don't?
how much am I paying for clicks I'd get free?

Commands and code are distilled from the project's own documentation — always check the official repo for the latest.

When to use it

  • Reach for it when you want Claude to audit a site from its real Search Console and GA4 numbers rather than third-party traffic estimates
  • Use the ai-visibility skill to see which AI engines send you visitors and which pages they land on
  • Run seo-vs-ads to find Google Ads queries you are paying for while already ranking organically
  • Good as a starting point for writing your own SEO skills on top of the Ryze connector's namespaced tools
